The start of the trip was peaceful. We traversed the San Diego river along a secluded bike path until suddenly we found ourselves within the city. The transition from the serene bike path into the traffic was a shock. Nothing had really prepared us for biking with city drivers. But after stopping to readjust our cargo in the Chargers parking lot, and finding the safety of the sidewalks, we were on our way once again.
Leaving the city behind us, we quickly found what the "Granny gears" on the touring bikes are designed for. When we first got our touring bikes both of us scoffed at ever needing to use these (I think we even talked about taking them off!), but suddenly we gained an apprecitation for them. Much of our cycling would have been imposible without them.
Disheartened by the traffic and steep inclines, we welcomed the transition onto a park trail. We will let the pictures explain:

Our scenic route lead us directly to a campground. The area was beautiful, clean, and completely deserted. At first we found the quiet very nice, but then we realized that absolutely none of the campsites were occupied, and that we might not be able to stay there. The sun was setting, it was a Thursday evening, and we found out that the campground was only open on the weekend. We were despondent. Luckily there were park managers on site, and after talking with one of them, and explaining how we would not be able to make it to another camp site that night, we were allowed to stay on the site. The beautiful campsite, quiet night, and mountain views were a great start to our touring trip (all fifteen miles so far).
