61.5 miles today. I have no idea quite how we managed that. At first thought, I feel as though all we did was sit in our hotel this morning and then sit in a McDonalds later, trying to avoid the lightning and rain. But South Carolina is flat, flat like South Florida, so I guess somewhere between the lightning strikes it was possible to manage 61.5 miles.
Radar Image from Weatherbug (we are the little red dot with the 77 degrees, the other red dot is where we were going):

We bicycled through primarily flat terrain, with maybe three small, rolling hills at one point in the day. It was very humid and wet. If we forgot to wipe off the camera lens before taking a picture, it looked like the next two:

Had we not had maps, we could have been in Florida for all we knew. Endless flat roads, surrounded by pine trees and often bordered by mosquito ditches. Currenty we are biking in what is dubbed the Coastal Plains, due to its proximity to the coast, low elevation, and flatness.

We went over a few more bridges with wide, flowing rivers. These are a big change from the small rivers and creeks in Missouri, which all seemed stagnant and still. There was an alligator swimming below us, just a little guy of about 4ft long. To add to the list of our encouragements, we had two loud blasts from the train whistle, and a wave from the conductor:

It was a scenic location, and we caught our first, and only, glimpse of the sun for the day as it peeked out behind some clouds. It was about 5pm in these photos.

We continued biking and arrived in Jamestown, where we hoped to spend the night. Oops. We didn't do our homework properly. There was no place to stay anywhere near there. Not a big enough town for a hotel, inn or campground. We stopped at the gas station to ask about where the nearest place of lodging might be: 21 miles away. It was getting late as we headed towards Moncks Corner. Night fell when we were about 10 miles outside of the city. We turned on our lights and kept pedaling. Most of the light traffic was pretty courteous, but there were a few cars that made us veer off the road and one, oh-so-very-nice vehicle that threw a can at us that hit me in the foot. Very considerate. Needless to say we were happy to arrive at the city and find a nice, warm, dry bed to sleep in.
