getting started

After all the planning and the craziness, it is amazing to think that we successfully shipped our bikes to Kelly's house, that we didn't miss our plane (thank you Mom!), and particularly, that we ever left San Diego (thank you Kelly, Mickie, and Michael - and Newman and Jerry - for the great time).

We spent a lot of time choosing the best items for our trip, mainly light, easy to use, and hardy. We have a wonderful pocket rocket stove, which is the equivalent of an elaborate bunsen burner, and a packeable pot set. We have a cozy little tent, a Nikon D3100 (with warranty - very important), and an iPad so we can share our journeys and see what is happening with the rest of the world. We were rather shocked when we fit everything we needed into four panniers, two rack bags, and two handlebar bags, and then on our bikes.

We flew into San Diego and Kelly let us crash in his comfy gameroom/office/very comfy room with vaulted ceilings. His four footed friends, Newman and Jerry, quickly forced us to feel at home, with Jerry following Chris around with baleful eyes and a tennis ball. Kelly and Mickie toured us around San Diego, taking us to Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo (we saw pandas!!!!!!!), a Padres game, the seal beach in La Jolla, and just driving around to see the sights. For all of the hamburger lovers, we also went to In-N-Out :)

before we could set off on our adventure, we had to reassemble our bikes. Chris gets credit for the more skill-requiring tasks of assemblying my bike, as well as assembling his own. We excitedly pulled our bicycle pieces out of the box, and they looked something like this:

We eventually got them back together.

Overall it was a great way to spend seven days in San Diego. It gave both of us time to unwind and chill out (the nights in the jacuzzi staring out over the city of El Cajon, complete with mountains in the distance didn't hurt). It was very difficult to leave - good food, comfy couches, lots of fun, and excellent company. But by Thursday afternoon, the 26th of May, we were both getting finally ready to begin our adventure.
